Power is the rate at which energy can be transferred, and there are several different powers that are associated with the pumping process. In order for power to be transferred to the water, it needs to go through several steps: from the electrical wires into the pump motor, from the motor into the pump, and finally from the pump to the water itself. Each transfer results in energy losses.
